HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)

Miho Pine Grove, Suruga Province
Signed: Hiroshige ga
Series: Views of the 60 Odd Provinces
Publisher: Koshihei
c 1853

Good impression, some fading to colors. Minor soiling. Narrow margins

This is the best view of Mount Fuji in the series.  In the foreground are the pine trees and white sandy beach of Mino Peninsula on Suruga Bay.  According to legend a celestial maiden (Japanese angel) was attracted by the beauty of this spot.  She hung the feathered robe that enabled her to fly on a pine tree while she swam in the lovely waters.  A fisherman took her robe and refused to return it until she danced for him.  Unfortunately the white beaches which added to the beauty of this spot in the past are no longer white.
