Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as samurai in disguise
Signed: Toyokuni ga
Publisher: Unidentified, but perhaps Kanekichi
Date Seal: 1852
(but actually printed 1854)
Generally quite good impression, colors and condition.
An most interesting print. A memorial portrait of Danjuro VIII who died in 1854 at the age of 32.
The dating on the print as 1852 is most likely when the"face" was approved for Kunisada's Tokaido set
of actor portraits and was just recycled when Danjuro VIII died unexpectedly in 1854.
The play "Fuwa" is the oldest play in the Kabuki Juhachiban and was first performed in 1680
by Danjuro I.
