CHIKANOBU (1838-1912)
Turtle on String
Signed: Chikanobu
circa 1895
Oban triptych. Very good impression, colors and condition.
The popular Buddhist ritual hojoe was to take captured living things, such as fish, birds, and turtles, and let them go free. (This used to be practiced on August 15, but since 2004 has also been practiced on September 14 and 15.) The idea behind the ritual was partly to show respect for living things (that one might otherwise hunt) and also in the hopes that the person who released these creatures would gain merit for their path to enlightenment.
