KUNICHIKA (1835-1900)

Kawarasaki Gonnosuke VII (aka Danjuro IX) as Daroku in Ono no Tofu
Signed: Kunichika hitsu
Untitled Series of Actor Portaits
Publisher: Gusokuya Kahei
Block Cutter: Ota Hari Ta

Very good impression and colors. Centerfold, some stains, rubbing and thin spots in margins.

Daroku is the villain in Ono no Tofu.

Although Danjuro’s father was in fact Danjuro VII he was adopted by Ichikawa Gonnosuke VI who was murdered by a thief in 1868.  The future Danjuro IX assumed the title Gonnosuke VII and performed as such until 1874 when he assumed the far more prestigious title of Ichikawa Danjuro IX.

This is part of an untitled series of 22 “large-head” format actor prints.  It contains many of Kunichika’s finest works.  In the set Danjuro was the most represented with 5 prints.
This particular design is one of the very best and most realistic of any portrait ever done of Danjuro IX.

Note the border of 3 concentric rice measures (mimasu) of the symbol of the Ichikawa Danjuro line.
