HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)

Teahouses at the Pass on Asamayama in Ise Province
Signed: Hiroshige ga
Series: Views of the 60 Odd Provinces
Publisher: Koshihei
c 1853

Very good impression and colors.

Travellers move along a mountain pass, or stop at tea-houses to rest and admire the view across Ise Bay.  Mount Asama is the most active volcano on Honshu, Japan’s main island.  The red sky seen in many of Hiroshige’s prints was a real phenomena caused by the volcanic activity of Mount Asama.  It last erupted in 2009.
