HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)

Whirlpool at Naruto in Awa Province
Signed: Hiroshige ga
Series: Views of the 60 Odd Provinces
Publisher: Koshihei
c 1855

Very good impression, somewhat faded colors. Very narrow margins. Small tear in lower left margin, repair upper right margin.

This is considered the masterpiece of the series.  We are looking out from Awaji Island, across the Strait of Naruto, a narrow body of water separating the island of Shikoku from the island of Honshu, and connecting the Inland Sea to the Pacific Ocean.  The tides here cause large volumes of water to move back and forth violently through the strait.  At times there is a difference of about 6' between the levels of the Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean, resulting in fast currents and creating whirlpools that can reach 65' in diameter.
