HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)

Maiko Beach in Harima Province
Signed: Hiroshige ga
Series: Views of the 60 Odd Provinces
Publisher: Koshihei
c 1853

Very good impression and colors. Slight centerfold.

Hiroshige uses his mastery of perspective to create this awesome depiction of Maiko Beach, on the Inland Sea, a place once popular with visitors for its scenic beauty.  A few travellers can be seen by some tea houses, almost hidden behind the gnarled trees.  Maiko are apprentice geisha.  The aged pine trees seem to evoke the graceful dancing of those young women.  Sadly, today, the pine trees are gone and the developed seafront runs underneath a large suspension bridge. One of the best regarded prints in the series.
