HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)
Cranes above Waves
Signed: Hiroshige fude
Dated: 1858
In 1858, Hiroshige designed a kakemono (hanging scroll print) of cranes flying above a crashing wave. This design was later very slightly adapted to be a single sheet print with different coloring in the sky. This single sheet was frequently used as a good-luck decoration; many people who assembled albums of their prints attached them to the inside cover.
Quite good impression and colors. Stain in sky.
