YOSHIIKU (1833-1904)

Strange and Wondrous Immortal Turtles
Signed:  Chokaru Yoshiiku ga
Publisher:  Kichibei
Dated: 1864

The turtles all have faces of real Kabuki actors, the men who were the idols and superstars of Tokugawa Japan.  Sometimes the actor's mon, or logo, is used as part of the shell pattern.  The teacup is inscribed with the character for "long life"- a wish for the actors to have long and prosperous careers.

Oban triptych. Quite good impression and colors. Slightly trimmed, some spots, some nibbling to edges and other minor flaws.
